Hike Leaders: Albert S and Bryan M.
Date: Saturday, February 25, 2017
Time: 10:00 a.m.
Location: Echo Park
DISTANCE: 5 miles + 1 mile back
HIKE TIME: 2 ½ - 3 hours
DIFFICULTY: Strenuous. Includes 4 steep staircases, with a total of 695 steps.
Urban staircases! Brunch! Gay art! Join us for a lovely Saturday exploring a handful of the impressive and relatively unknown staircases in the Echo Park neighborhood. We plan on climbing a total of 4 staircases in a neighborhood loop, each of varying height and difficulty. Each staircase promises pleasant views of hillsides, possible wildlife, and the surrounding communities, including Silver Lake, Los Feliz and Griffith Park.
“This is Echo Park’s most rigorous walk --- the highest number of steps in the minimum amount of time --- with a surplus of physical beauty. Along the way are views from Downtown to Westwood, a walk in Elysian Park, and a Who’s Who of the historic Los Angeles arts scene and of the area’s famous communists and socialists.” - Charles Fleming, Secret Stairs.
BRUNCH: After the stair-hike, we will stroll over towards Sunset Blvd. to have brunch (restaurant to be determined). PLEASE RSVP TO US BY THURS, FEB. 23 if you want to secure your spot for lunch reservation. We will need a head count. Contact leaders below.
ART OPENING: After brunch, join us at an afternoon art show opening of gay Berlin artist Rinaldo Hopf at the famous Tom of Finland House, also located in Echo Park.
RETURN WALK: On your own, about 1 mile back to the meeting point. Optionally, take the bus or use Lyft/Uber.
WHAT TO BRING: Comfortable clothing for stair-hiking, a hat, sunscreen, good shoes, water, cash for brunch.
DIRECTIONS/PARKING: UPDATE: Parking Information
We will be meeting at the corner of Lucretia Avenue & Echo Park Avenue, right in front of Valerie Echo Park Bakery & Cafe at 10 a.m.
The most ample street parking is available along Echo Park Avenue, north of Lucretia. The surrounding residential streets should also have parking available. Carpool is recommended.
See map below for our stair-walking route. We will continue onto brunch just a few blocks south from our meeting place (on Sunset). Stairwalk time is approximately 1.5 - 2 hours.
